Speaking at Princeton’s UDesign Conference

When I think of design at Princeton I think cerebral architecture, but in two weeks the university is hosting a conference about making design accessible and useful. They invited me to speak about sustainable industrial design. I plan to discuss how design that anticipates patina is the most sustainable; something like my post about how New York City handles rainfall. It’s a start, but I think I can go deeper with the conference’s “design for non-specialists” theme. Any suggestions?
The conference is March 1st and totally free. You should come! Register here.

These days, when we hear the word “sustainable” we think mostly of recycled or recyclable materials. This is definitely valuable. But, I think another aspect of sustainable design is getting back to the old concept of designing products to be usable forever, or as close to forever as possible. Granted, this is tough when technology changes so rapidly, but, just as we should try design with an goal of recycling as much as possible, we should also design for the longest possible usage.

That, sir, was amazing. (I didn’t see anyone recording, but I didn’t look for it.)

Joey thx for providing such an integral and unique point of view to the conference.. your talk was one of the more insightful for me personally. I’d like to talk some more about sustainability because I’m currently working with Penn Praxis to create and present designs for the Kimmel Center for Performing Arts in Center City, Philadelphia. KCPA was meant to be a flourishing public space, and while Vinoly’s architecture is stunning, it has utterly failed as a public space and we aim to change that through sustainable design… so far we are thinking of a living roof, implementing water to cool and humidify the spaces, etc.
Anyhow- great talk, man!
