[…] I just received my Sorapot from Joey Roth last night. The Sorapot is such an incredibly novel little thing. The aesthetic design is beautiful. It is minimalistic, but still has a kind of flair to it. I love the semi-sphere structure. First thoughts on it? It is incredibly solid. The main cast aluminum pieces that make up the frame seem like they could take a fall without more than a cosmetic scratch or two. The fact that the glass canister is removable also makes cleanup a lot easier than your standard teapot. Just wash the canister in some warm soapy water if need be, then put it back in and fill it up with a little hot water, then swish it around and drain. […]

I designed Sorapot to emphasize one of my favorite- the unfurling of tea leaves. Sorapot suspends the process of tea making in a glass tube a few centimeters above your tabletop. Unlike standard teapots that confine tealeaves in a small mesh basket, your leaves will have full run of Sorapot’s interior as they unfurl and change the hot water into tea. You might even see a tea-colored shadow cast by sunlight that passes through the tube and comes to rest in a gossamer puddle on your table.” […]

  50. Jefferey 01.06.08 / 10pm

This is a beautiful-looking tea pot.

But coming from a serious tea drinker there is one flaw in the design - you can’t remove the leaves after a minute or two. This means you can pour one cup (generally tea is not consumed from a pint glass) and then the remaining tea will become over-brewed and bitter.

Thanks for your comment Jefferey. When I was sketching concepts for my ideal teapot two years ago, I specifically wanted to avoid using a mesh basket. I’ve found that tea tastes best when the leaves are given full run of the teapot’s interior and can expand and circulate freely. You’re right that the way to control infusion time is to completely pour the tea into cups. I designed Sorapot with this in mind, and restricted its capacity to 11oz, which is just enough to comfortably fill one mug or two teacups. Like a traditional Yixing pot, the idea is to pour out all the tea at once after an infusion. When you’d like a second cup, you can add more water to the leaves, letting them steep slightly longer. High-quality teas respond well to multiple infusions, and reveal different characteristics each time you add water.

Nice renderings, but since you say you want critical feedback (I see that was almost a year ago; I may be too late) I offer two pieces of advice: 1) disassembly/assembly for each brew is likely too great an obstacle for most users. 2) The arch acts as a heat sink… which is great, except that the arch also appears to be the handle. OW. I also fail to see that this is a vast improvement over, say, an entirely ceramic pot where the whole thing is a heat sink.
